GHEP: The launch of a new journal

January 2021 marks the launch of a new journal in the field of Digestive Diseases. Given the plethora of journals in this field already, one may ask why yet another journal. This Journal arose as a result of a felt need among gastroenterologists in this region of the world for publishing their work. Established journals in the gastroenterology, hepatology, and endoscopy space have become very selective in what they publish. Other journals in this space are of a somewhat predatory nature, often requiring that authors pay stiff publication fees in the guise of open access.
Busy gastroenterologists in this region of the world have shied away from publishing because of the obstacles mentioned above and instead focusing on clinical practice. As a result, there is little representation from Southern India in academic gastroenterology at both national and international levels. At a meeting of gastroenterologists in Tamil Nadu, Prof. C. E. Eapen suggested that a new journal be started that that would overcome one of the problems responsible for the paucity of publications from the group. Dr. J. Ubaldhus, Dr. V. Balasubramanian and Prof. K.R. Palaniswamy acted on this suggestion and set in motion the process to start this new journal. The aim of this Journal is to encourage a culture of publication among gastroenterologists and residents in gastroenterology, to foster the rise of academic gastroenterology in this region.
The Tamil Nadu Gastroenterologist Trust was established in 2003, with the stated aim of promoting gastroenterology in Tamil Nadu. The Trust conducts regular scientific programs both at national and international level, conducts community awareness programs in association with the World Gastroenterology Organization, and awards grants and prizes to postgraduates in the field of gastroenterology. The Trust also contributes in various national disaster management activities.
When this initiative to start a new journal was discussed, the Trust had no hesitation in backing the venture. The editorial strategy is to invite manuscripts including original research, reviews, and case studies from any part of the world. We aim for a rapid turnaround of papers with authors getting a decision within a matter of weeks rather than months. There are several stages of the review process including an initial check for formatting, which may require return to the authors for appropriate changes and reloading on the manuscript submission site. Peer review will be rapid, and there are no publication charges for open access. As the Journal evolves, it is planned to add further sections including editorials on original articles of interest and review of the literature in the field. The Journal is aimed at practicing gastroenterologists, particularly in developing countries, who may not have the time or inclination to read the very academic gastroenterology journals that have an emphasis on basic science rather than clinical practice.
The Journal is fortunate in partnering with Wolters Kluwer and will have access to all the online submission and review tools available on their new platform. We look forward to support from gastroenterologists from any region of the world who are interested in reading and publishing in a journal primarily oriented to clinical practice in the fields of gastroenterology, hepatology, and digestive endoscopy.
